Session Format

We encourage you to think creatively about your presentations, design, and format to provide attendees with the best experience. Please choose the presentation type that best fits your material and utilizes your content in the best way. Skill-building workshops, solution-based sessions, demonstrations and sessions that showcase best practices are in high demand.

Please be ready to indicate your session format when submitting a GWS 2024 Session Proposal

As part of a 60-minute session, workshops teach a specific skill and include one or more exercises that let attendees practice this skill. These sessions differ from demonstrations in that attendees will have a hands-on opportunity to practice.

Demonstrations are formal 60-minute presentations that show how to use or apply a concept or tool. These sessions differ from skill-building workshops which provide a hands-on experience.

A fishbowl is a way to organize a medium to large-group discussion. Participants are divided into an inner and outer circle. The inner circle is the ‘fishbowl’ and this is where a handful of people discuss a given topic. The rest of the participants listen and take notes. After a set time, the ‘fishbowl’ is replaced with other members of the outside circle. This is rotated until everyone has spent time sharing their thoughts in the fishbowl. This format is often facilitated by a moderator.

A think tank is a 60-minute session focusing on a single issue or question. Initially, a chairperson orients attendees to the issue or question and relevant context. Then, attendees break into small groups to explore the issue or question and finally, reconvene to share their enhanced understanding through a discussion facilitated by the chairperson. The session description should succinctly identify the question or issue to be addressed, the relevant contextual factors, and the roles of the individual breakout groups.

This formal, thematic, 60-minute presentation focuses on an issue facing the industry. The goal is to provide a coordinated presentation by two or three panelists, and possibly a discussant, on the panel's general topic.
