U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Revamps E-Verify Website

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has launched a new website for E-Verify. Using E-Verify, employers can determine whether new employees are eligible for being employed in the United States.

E-Verify is an online verification system administered by USCIS and the Social Security Administration using information on the USCIS Form I-9, on which the employee attests to their citizenship or residency status in the US, which is then cross-referenced to Social Security records. E-Verify also allows employees to potentially correct any technical issues that occur during the verification process as well as report violations unfair treatment or practices under the system.

In addition to changes in the look for the E-Verify website, the site was modernized to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the system to verify employee eligibility to work in the US. Specific changes to the system as outlined by USCIS are as follows:

  • Enhanced usability features to help users enter correct information and makes E-Verify more user friendly;
  • Streamlined case creation and management to increase results speed and accuracy;
  • Improved overall data integrity and system compliance; and,
  • Transferred case data to a new modernized database.

USCIS made the changes to E-Verify based on feedback from employers and the availability of enhanced features. A detailed list current of improvements to E-Verify can be accessed on the April 2018 enhancements list.

The changes to E-Verify should allow employers to more easily verify the eligibility of transferees to work in the United States.
