Know Before You Go—Rabies Antibody Testing
Many countries in the world are rabies free, and their animal import regulations guard their country’s biosecurity.
There are two types of rabies antibody titer tests—FAVN-OIE and RFFIT. Only the FAVN-OIE is accepted by all countries, and the testing must be run at an approved lab. Most countries require rabies vaccination at least 30 days before the rabies antibody blood draw.
Following the country veterinary protocol is critical to a successful move. Every step must be done correctly to avoid delays. The required test must be done by a USDA-accredited veterinarian. Dog owners should expect a minimum of at least four veterinary visits, and cat owners should expect a minimum of three visits to complete the required protocols for some countries.
The table below details common destinations requiring rabies antibody testing before importing dogs, cats, and ferrets.

WALTER M. WOOLF, VMD, FOUNDER AND CEO
Dr. Walter Woolf entered private practice in Tampa, FL, after earning a doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. After opening Woolf Animal Hospital near Tampa International Airport in 1961, airline carriers sought his advice on how to best meet the needs of traveling animals. The experience opened his eyes to the growing need for a service focused exclusively on the complex requirements for moving pets domestically and abroad. Dr. Woolf opened Air Animal Pet Movers alongside his private veterinary practice in 1977, helping to set the standards for the growing animal relocation industry. One of six original founders of IPATA, Dr. Woolf was honored with IPATA’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.

Air Animal has helped more than 50,000 families move their 110,000 furry, feathered, and scaly pets around the globe. They welcome referrals from major corporations, relocation management agencies, household goods movers, veterinarians, families, U.S. military, and government transferees. Air Animal is an appointed and endorsed IATA air cargo sales agency working with all airlines that move animals. They are an Indirect Air Carrier cleared for tendering live animals to airlines by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration.
