We are so much more than a single story or event. Yet our minds run wild when hearing disturbing bits of information and create scenarios that are not helpful for building trusting and productive relationships in a diverse workplace.

Here are just a few examples:

  • Based on reports of school shootings in the U.S., how safe would you feel relocating to America with children?
  • How do friends and co-workers from Russia, China and Iran feel living in America? Do we understand the complexity of their lives here?
  • Have you found it more challenging to be on teams at work (or dinner tables) with people who share different political views?

Working mindfully to represent the values and ideas you believe in, while collaborating with those who have different beliefs and opinions is a rare and needed cross-cultural skill in the U.S., and around the world. We can change the tone of a debate to create more space for respectful dialogue by listening and acknowledging what is valuable in the other.

The 2018 Global Talent Competitive Index reports that collaboration between people with different values, knowledge sets, perspectives and experiences will play a critical role in linking global talent policies to innovative strategies. The report also concludes that people are often ill-equipped to collaborate with others who are different from themselves.

In this one-hour webinar, we will share tools and tips to help attendees identify blind spots that limit their ability to problem solve. We will examine the cultural adaptation cycle and the natural response and often-defensive phase that is a part of adjusting to difference. We will also discuss how participants can utilize their cross-cultural skills to be a bridge for others to build more collaborative and adaptive workplaces.
