We often hear younger Americans described as “millennials.” Who are they, exactly? It varies, but Pew Research Center considers them the people born between 1981 and 1996.
The 2015 U.S. Census counted nearly 75 million millennials. In 2019 they’ll be 23-37 years old and will outnumber baby boomers. A report by The Brookings Institution states that by 2020 one of three adult Americans will be millennials, and by 2025, they’ll make up 75 percent of the nation’s workforce. According to Pew, 43 percent moved for job opportunities in 2016.
These mobile millennials need help getting settled in their new cities, and this creates opportunities for logistics professionals to fill a need in the marketplace.
As the saying goes, follow the money. According to Accenture, the money leads to millennials, who spend a reported $600 billion per year. By 2020 that number is projected to grow to $1.4 trillion, or 30 percent of total retail sales. Millennials tend to go where the action is — in this case, locations with plentiful jobs at good wages. Progressive companies are willing to recruit, promote and pay top young talent, and relocation expenses are often part of the package.
Millennials expect fast, personal service. They don’t want to call, wait on hold or run through a maze to get the help they need.
